In today's modern education system we need education tools that are up to date with the System. Joseph believes we should begin the process of moving forward from textbooks to the electrical system of iPad's and Kindles for 2 full reasons. 1. Students are more likely to take care of electronics over a heavy book. A current High School Student has about 7 classes to which they have at least 5 textbooks putting to much weight on their back, causing them to leave their books at school or not use them at all, which leads them to not do any homework assigned which ends up in the student not gaining a proper education. If we switched to iPad's or Kindles students would be more likely to carry the material with them every where they go and would be more likely to take care of the electronic over a textbook. 2. With Electronic Education Tools, there would be less of a need for paperback homework. All homework could be submitted onto the electronic device where it could be graded and submitted into the grading system faster. This would cause less work for the teachers meaning they would get more time to spend with their loved ones.
Student to Teacher Ratios
The current Student to Teacher Ratio's are too high and are causing students to miss out on a 1 on 1 opportunity with the teacher. Joseph supports bringing on Teachers Aides so students could have support from either the teacher or the aide which would further the chance of a 1 on 1 opportunity which in the end would support students in getting proper grades and graduating with knowledge needed to go into today's society.
In today's society the bullying epidemic is at an all time high and school staff have continually pass over it. Joseph will hold all staff members accountable for bullying in their schools and on school properties and if reported, a proper chain of command in place to make sure the situation gets handled. Students should feel safe in all school settings. Bullying is unacceptable whether on school property, district property, or online. Students who are bullying should be held accountable and schools that do not properly investigate the situation should be held accountable as well.
The current Standardized testing system acts to some as a judging of what students don't know and a judgment of teachers, and not a discovery of where students need support. Joseph supports ending all standardized testing and beginning a new testing system, STANCE. STANCE would be a test that shows where students stand in school. The test would be taken at the beginning of the school year, middle of the school year and end of the school year to show where students stand and where they need the most support.
Across the United States, School Shootings have become more of a reality to many. Joseph believes support must be put into all schools to make sure all students attain the high amount of safety they deserve when attending school. In November 2017, Citizens of District 11 approved the Mill Levy Override to which part of the funds go to hiring CSPD Officers to be SRO's in Middle Schools, this is a beginning to a much higher needed safety support system. Joseph is against arming teachers, however he fully supports arming school security guards that pass rigorous training's on a yearly basis and get evaluations on a yearly basis. Joseph believes that should the weapon of the Security Guard be drawn at any time for any reason, the Security Guard must be placed on Administrative Leave pending investigations and the guard must undergo a check to make sure they can still handle the weapon.
Joseph believes that while students are in High School they should be equipped with a trade school license, so should they choose to go to college, they can leave school and have a license to go into the world and get a good paying job and be able to afford a college degree.
Common Core Curriculum
The current curriculum in schools is not preparing students for the future that is yet to be imagined. Joseph believes we should add classes to the curriculum that prepares students for tomorrow. Classes that will prepare them for what they need to know how to survive in today's society. As well with cutting back in classes that aren't necessary to the Students future. Students are currently leaving School not knowing about important real world aspects, Joseph believes we need to offer classes that fully prepare students for the world to which they are about to enter. Joseph also supports classes to which that would support students in their future career choice.
Joseph believes that funds currently being given to charter schools are in the high amount. He believes we should cutback on the amount of money given to schools, as well, he believes we should set up rules and regulations that charter schools must follow in order to continue receiving funds. Rules being along the lines of regulations to graduate and many others that currently stand in place in regular public schools.
Year Round School
Joseph does not support extending school years to year round. Joseph believes that the current amount of time in schools is well spent, however he does support extension of school days by 1 hour, should it need to come down to the case. Joseph believes that possibly extending the school day would mean students get more time in the classroom which would result in a better understanding of the subject at hand.
Joseph fully supports the current curriculum of Sex Education given in schools. Joseph fully believes that Sex Ed should be discontinued for Students in grade 5 and move to beginning of education in 8th grade. Joseph fully supports in High School a Safe Sex Ed Class for LGBTQIA+ and Questioning Students. Current curriculum focuses mainly on Straight students and does not support the LGBTQIA+ Students in knowing that who they love is normal and okay. Offering this class would give a proper education to all students and give them a safe environment to ask questions and learn what they need.
Currently teachers are acting as over paid babysitters. Joseph agrees with the current Board on the steps taken to raise funds for teachers that passed on May 14, 2015, however it acted to late and Joseph believes that we lost phenomenal teachers to schools that paid a true living wage. Joseph believes that all teachers should be paid a wage to which they can take care of their personal necessities, family needs and other areas. All teachers who use their personal money to purchase an item for the school or the student should be refunded all funds to make sure they are not losing any funds. Teachers should also be given a beginning of the year budget to purchase any supplies that are currently needed and make sure they have everything to succeed in the school year.
Joseph agrees to a parents right to choose the education and the location to where their child receives their education. Joseph believes teaching students on personal choices is best to begin at a young age. Joseph is against vouchers on all levels. He does not agree with taking funds away from a public school to fund a private education. Joseph believes that should there be any issue in their child's education that they do agree with, the parent are welcome to meet with the board and school administrators and find a common ground to supporting a students future education, however taking funds from Public Schools is beyond the answer in Joseph's beliefs.
