Joseph Shelton Condemns District 11 Board Members' Opposition to Transgender Protections: Calls for New Leadership Committed to All Students

Colorado Springs, CO — Joseph Shelton, candidate for one of the three open seats on the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education this November, is calling out current board members Sandra Bankes and Lauren Nelson for their decision to sign a letter urging the Colorado State Senate to vote against the Kelly Loving Act, a bill that would provide crucial protections for transgender individuals, particularly students.

The letter, authored by current Board Secretary Jason Jorgenson and signed by more than 80 school officials statewide—including Bankes and Nelson—claims that the legislation would create operational challenges and interfere with local control. Shelton strongly disagrees.

“Let’s be clear: Director Jorgenson does not speak for the full community of District 11,” said Shelton. “His letter, and the decision by Directors Bankes and Nelson to sign onto it, sends a dangerous message—that transgender students are not worthy of the same respect and dignity as their peers.”

The Kelly Loving Act, named in honor of a transgender woman killed in the Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs, aims to expand anti-discrimination protections, including clear guidelines on respecting chosen names and gender identities in schools. It also addresses issues such as misgendering, deadnaming, and inclusive dress codes—critical components for the safety and inclusion of transgender students.

“Time and time again, this Board has failed to prioritize the needs and humanity of our LGBTQ+ students and staff,” said Shelton. “By opposing a bill designed to ensure basic respect and protection, Directors Bankes and Nelson have once again shown they are out of touch with the diverse and inclusive values our district deserves.”

Shelton, who is seeking one of the three seats up for election in November—including those currently held by Bankes, Nelson, and outgoing member Julie Ott—emphasized his commitment to building a school district that reflects compassion, transparency, and respect for all students.

“Every student in District 11—regardless of their gender identity, sexuality, or background—deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported. I’m running because our students deserve leaders who don’t pick and choose who belongs.”

Joseph Shelton is an experienced community advocate and campus safety officer, known for his work supporting youth, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. His campaign prioritizes student success, honest governance, and creating inclusive schools where every student can thrive.
