Joseph Shelton, Candidate for Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education, Firmly Opposes Repeal of Equity Policy (Policy AG)
Colorado Springs, CO – March 20, 2025 – Last night, during the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education Work Session, a discussion was held regarding the possible repeal of Policy AG, the district’s Equity Policy. The Board placed this item under non-action status for the next General Board meeting, indicating that further discussions are ongoing about the potential end of this important policy.
As a candidate for the District 11 Board of Education in the upcoming November election, I am deeply concerned about this development and strongly oppose any move to repeal Policy AG. Equity in education is fundamental to creating a fair and inclusive environment for all students. The principles of Policy AG work to address the disparities that exist in achievement, discipline, and opportunities within our schools, ensuring that every student has access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
Equity in education is not about giving some students an advantage; it's about recognizing the barriers that prevent many students from reaching their full potential. Policy AG was created with the goal of closing educational gaps, ensuring safe learning environments, and providing professional training for educators on diversity and inclusion. Repealing this policy would not only undo the progress we’ve made but would also send the wrong message to our community, especially at a time when public education is already facing uncertainty.
The role of the Board should be to strengthen our commitment to every student, not to dismantle the systems in place that have been proven to close disparities. The voices of our community must be heard, and I will continue to advocate for fairness, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all students.
As a lifelong advocate for inclusive education, I remain committed to ensuring that District 11 upholds policies that make every student feel valued and supported. I urge the Board to reconsider their position on Policy AG and to listen to the concerns of the community in making decisions that impact the future of our students.
